Chapter 4

Salvation

The question of salvation has plagued humanity for thousands of years. According to the Bible, one of the earliest revelations of knowledge to humans concerns the coming salvation offered to humanity. Genesis 3:14–15, often called the proto-evangelium by scholars, referring to Satan, reads, “Because you have done this, you are cursed more than any livestock and more than any wild animal. You will move on your belly and eat dust all the days of your life. I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.” Scholars argue that this proto-evangelium, or first gospel, is God’s first mention of salvation—through the offspring of a woman—found in the Bible. From that point, the Bible is filled with references to salvation. Probably the most pressing question in the Bible concerning salvation is found in Acts 16:30, when the Philippian jailer asks Paul and Silas simply, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” Paul and Silas answered as simply as the jailer asked: “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved” (v. 31). Indeed, the question asked by the Philippian jailer has been asked countless times by countless people. All major living world religions have an answer to the questions of humanity’s problems and the ways those problems may be solved by deity. Likewise, nearly all new religious movements and minority religions answer the same questions. Those investigating the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have asked the same question the jailer asked thousands of years ago: what must I do to be saved? With that, we turn our attention to the Latter-day Saint doctrine of soteriology to answer the Philippian jailer’s question from an LDS perspective.
